A Day in Practice

Navigating Diagnostic Pauses in Gingival Pathology

Featuring: Dr. Sarah Glass

Periodontists frequently encounter gingival changes that extend beyond plaque induced disease and may represent immune mediated conditions, premalignant disorders, or malignancy. This case based, full day course is structured to mirror a typical day in periodontal practice, with each patient encounter introducing a diagnostic pause. Through clinically focused cases and images drawn from clinical scenarios, the presentation emphasizes real time decision making, biopsy planning, and early identification of significant gingival pathology.

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize gingival findings that deviate from expected periodontal inflammation and warrant further evaluation

2. Highlight clinical features and risk factors concerning for malignancy

3. Develop focused differential diagnoses for a variety of gingival lesions

4. Apply contemporary biopsy principles, including type and site selection, to optimize diagnostic accuracy

5. Integrate newly defined oral pathology entities and refined diagnostic criteria into clinical decision making

6. Communicate pathology related concerns and biopsy findings clearly to patients and interdisciplinary care teams

Dr. Sarah Glass is a board certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist. After graduating from the VCU School of Dentistry in 2014, she completed a three year hospital based residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology at New York Presbyterian Queens. In 2018, she returned to VCU, where she is currently an associate professor with tenure, interim chair of the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences, and Laboratory Director of Oral Diagnostic Services. Dr. Glass is deeply committed to education and is known for her clear, clinically relevant teaching style that emphasizes diagnostic reasoning, patient centered care, and preparing learners to manage uncertainty in clinical practice.
